A Man Called Destruction

Mary Mihelakos comes up and tells me that the photo she took almost 20 years ago has been included in the new Alex Chilton bio. A bit of a shock but at least I finally get to see it (long story).

Cease to Exist

Just saw some very cool but all-too-brief footage of Dennis Wilson (with the Beach Boys...without Brian) in the middle of yet another Manson Family "news" item on TV. The BBs were shown performing one of their best songs: "Never Learn Not to Love", actually an (uncredited) re-interpretation of Charles Manson's "Cease to Exist". The song was released as a b-side in late 1968 and also included on the 1969 album 20/20. Thanks to the glory of YouTube it's possible to enjoy the Beach Boys performance in its entirety and also compare it to the source.

2 Guys Walk Into A Diner

The Killers (dir: Robert Siodmak, 1946)

Al: What do you do here nights?
Max: They eat the dinner. They all come here and eat the big dinner.
Manager: That's right.
Al: You're a pretty bright boy, aren't ya?
Manager: Sure.
Max: Well, you're not.
